
Memorizing vs Understanding
Memorizing involves knowing the theory behind something. To commit to memory; learn by heart.
In contrast, understanding requires you to have a grasp on how the theory plays out in practice. Understand is to achieve a grasp of the nature, significance, or explanation of something.
Both of these techniques use different parts of the brain. Both of these techniques have their uses.
Comprehension is the understanding and interpretation of what is read. To be able to accurately understand written material, children need to be able to (1) decode what they read; (2) make connections between what they read and what they already know; and (3) think deeply about what they have read.
I realize more and more that many people have the ability to memorize information or techniques, but do not necessarily understand the information, process and the why.
It’s like a person reciting scriptures from the Bible, but to then ask what it means they may struggle. Or when someone creates a routine in how something is done…but do not understand how the real process and importance.
I’m a researcher and like to understand the why, but at times I too memorize information or songs with out thinking through what it all means.
