INSIDE THE INDUSTRY

How do indie music artists make money?
Another route for increasing your annual salary as an independent artist is touring. Because of how many fans you can get to buy tickets and merch at your shows, this can quickly outweigh streaming royalties. As of 2023, musicians make between $11,000 to well over $100,000 each year they embark on a tour.Jan 8, 2023

From time to time I google or seek out YouTubes or Podcasts that speak on topics pertaining to the Indie Music Scenes and more.
I’ve always wanted to stay up on how up and coming unknown talents that have mastered their craft can step into the arena of making money from what they do.
This industry has changed drastically from when I was coming up to when I embarked on being Lady Flava.
Once upon a time Artist hustled music at shows, out of the trunks of their cars, barbershops & hair salons and more. Organic street hustling.
In 2023 it’s streaming online amongst of plethora of others. The competition is tough to stand out. You have to have something that stands, something that captures people’s attention. Something that makes you memorable. An experience that makes the masses crave more.
I have talked about branding and merchandise for years. This is so important to, but the real trick is appealing to those who will become you fan, a TRUE FOLLOWER.
How to standout? What is the thing that sells people on wanting to support and spread the words?

Taylor Swift is in Seattle this weekend. Her Seattle tour sold out in a matter of hours. What is the appeal? How did the simple girl grow into a global music icon?
Many clearly thinks she’s awesome and of course those that are not fans. The bottom line is she and her clear created a brand and grew it from there, as they tweaked it along the way.
How does a Taylor Swift grow, while so many others do get beyond a section of the city where they’re from…or originated from.

Give your following something to talk about and encourage them to share with their people, their network.
Create an experience that is visually memorable and a quality standout moment. Encourage your audience to follow you and engage with you on social media. Ask that they tag you in their favorable posts about what they experienced. Interact with your fans in public, set boundaries with them behind the scenes.
Do your research on you industry and how things work TODAY. What once worked, may not work any longer. Stay up with the industry and find your way to organically stand out.
