If it takes a village to raise a child…I would say the same thing in regards to supporting up & coming artists…It takes a village to push them out into the spotlight!
Lady Flava
The Indie Artist Cheerleader and Advocate

As I was coming up, I always heard my elders say that it takes a village to raise a child and I was blessed to have wonderful people surrounding me as I went through the different stages of my life. I have thought about this statement as I raised my children and now my grandchildren. It is so important to have safe adults for your children to witness how to handle life and carry yourself to be engageable. We are engaging people but not push overs and my children’s children are wonderful young people feeling their way through life with good heads on their shoulders.
I embarked on being Lady Flava in 2004 and taking it seriously starting in 2007…My thoughts were always around how can we better support amazing independent talents and gain them exposure to more people than their own read. So, I began my campaign of cheering them on, Lady Flava; Indie Artist’s Cheerleader, Advocate and Consultant.
Life and connecting on social media is very different than the early days of MySpace and Facebook…Now we deal with Algorithms and numbers but less connected. There are a variety of social medias to get involved on and yes, I do believe that there is a strong effective need to be on these platforms, but I also believe you need to find a network online that believes in what you are doing, and you can find an appeal for them to become a part of your team.
Artists/Creative SoulZ need to create and draw a village to help support their quality artistry to go beyond their reach. The Creative needs to identify what type of people they need and start networking and connecting with people that have the capability to help in those areas. Also, have character that would draw them to want to help and a quality product/project that they will be drawn to believe in and want to support.
- You first villagers are those on your immediate team, the band, DJ, performers, the venue, the support staff, etc.
- Then you have the support villagers who have the skills, connections, ability to help provide a polish product.
- Lastly you have the visiting villagers…Your fans (those the consistently show up to those that follow you on social media)

I like the saying “It Takes A Village…” because in so many areas of our lives personal, professional, and creative…you need a Village to help you do what your goal is to achieve.
