A&E | Do Other People Determine Who You Value In Arts & Entertainment?

I am curious to find out what is the determining factor for you to decide to step out and either attend an event or to make a purchase of something a creative soul has produced.

I wonder if some of us don’t even think about our why we choose to do something or why we decide to purchase a book, some music or attend an event.

I know that my thought process may be way different than the average person…because I always want to know the why about something. So I try to ask questions as to the why… Sometimes I get a wonderful explanation and other times I can tell that a person is really not sure…but it was because of someone else or an advertisement that they saw.

I believe that I have spoken about this before…

I had the blessing to sit and spend sometime with a woman that I have great respect for and one of the nicest people that I had the opportunity to be around from time to time. She is related to a music icon and legend and I asked her the question, “why to you go out to the shows or places that you do?” I could tell that she had to put some thought into it. She did confess that she prefers to go where she is going to know the music, she finds it challenging to attend a show that she had never heard the music before. That is why the classics and cover songs are so embraced in Vegas, people want to experience what they know. I did ask her what she felt about her loved one and when they put out new music, and she did share that she wasn’t always sure that people would like it and she was nervous about a new release, but his music will live on forever…and she never saw that coming.

I do believe that people get familiar with venues and performers and like to go out to see familiar faces and to be seen. I think that attending a show partly is to be social and to be seen. So, if the experience is more about being social or being seen is there value in experiencing the creatives presentation?

I watched the Netflix Beyonce’s Homecoming Documentary with my daughter and grandbaby. I am not a big fan of Beyonce but I respect the time, planning and topnotch production level that goes into her music and concert’s. It is much more of grand production with the bells and whistles of stage props and great talents…Every nuance is well planned out and executed. Every color, lighting, placement, movement and sound well thought out. Of course we can say that she had the money and the people to pull off what she does and yes she does…but what I realize is that is comes form her mindset and determination to the people that she exposes herself to, to learn and grow into a entertainment mogul.

So she fills venues, stadiums and festival grounds just because people know that it will be a memorable experience. It could come from friends agreeing to go together, the massive advertisement that is seen and heard that creates the buzz. I saw numerous people talk about and show proof that they attended her concerts all around the world.

With local groups, I believe they have created a loyal following and they know for sure a certain following to come out. The challenge is to grow that following and to lure new people to come out for the experience.

I know that I am different because I troll social media and pay attention to what people are promoting or even not promoting and who is on their social media team and who are the ones that will step up and repost or public post about their experience. One thing I will say, there are people who will post pictures up of being somewhere, but there is little said about the quality of the performance and what they really enjoyed about it. That is where I come to some of my conclusion that people like to be social and to be seen.

My hope has always been for great talents to grow their audiences…

Now we have so much to possible explore on social media, I sense the more attention that a creative gains, the more following, the more possibilities of a popular post to be seen by more people. You could be an amazing talent but if you don’t have the ability to grow your following with a good brand and other people talking about you, you reach may remain where it has been for years.

So, to go back to the question of this blog, do other people determine how you experience arts & entertainment and who you decide to check out. I know that back in the day we listened to the radio and we saw billboards, or advertisement was in newspapers’ (mainstream and local.) People would get on the phone and let their people know when they heard about something. And posters would be plastered everywhere. Leaflets where put on cars and people would hand them out on street corners…the days of “Street Teams” and grassroots approaches to getting the word out.

When books were written and a book review shared their thoughts, there was some possibilities to gain new customers and readers. People who follow visual art and make a purchase to hand on their wall may take pictures and brag about a people that they now own.

Now days, they even try to control the Reviewer…dictating what they can post and taking pictures and videos. (This is a subject of another blog I will be putting out.)

I don’t think you need to have a whole lot of props and effects to put on a memorable experience. But I do believe that you need to put on a quality experience that is well executed and I do believe the more you bring your audience into the experience, they are more likely to talk about it after the event. I truly believe that when people are talking (posting words over praise not just pictures) that is when there is potential for someone self to see what’s being said that is new to who you are and what you do.

I know if someone was to come to me and tells me that I missed a great show or I should get a certain book because they feel I would appreciate it, I am more likely to pay attention and remember a name. There is a lady in Vegas that goes by the name of Sparkle, she is a huge advocate and supporter of Black Owned Small Businesses. When ever I see her post, I would pay attention and would seek out a eatery because she wrote about it and then I in turn would write about my experience.

I have been getting a lot of feedback from Yelp and how many people have read my reviews that now I have been invited to go to certain restaurants to in turn write reviews. I know that I could grow this into a business if I was to commit to doing restaurant reviews. There is a young man in Vegas that would go to whole in the wall eateries and purchase food and usually a lot of food and who himself eating in his car or from a child’s chair and table at home…he has blown up in Vegas and across the US to the point he has been on National TV Morning Shows to being flown to locations to share his thoughts on a restaurant. Even Kevin Hart had him come give an honest review of his restaurant. Keith Lee create a brand that stayed consistent, simple and has grown in his influence to help struggling businesses gain more customers and revenue.

Do you pay attention to social media, do you see some form of advertisement or does a family or friends experience encourage you to step out to experience something new.

Do other people influence what you pay attention to when it comes to arts & entertainment?

How can we help deserving creatives and small business owners grow their businesses?

I would like to heart your thoughts.
