What’s The Best Piece of Advice I’ve Received

I know that I come from an older generation and perspective. So, the words of wisdom most came from my Daddy and God-Mom

Daddy: Daddy told me to be careful of the people you allow into your space because it is hard to remove it.

He was a Baptist Minister my whole life with him, and he always told me that my mother kept a wonderful calm home for him to return wither it was dealing with church members, the college where he was an administrator or going to a variety of meetings. We rarely had people over now that I really thing about this. I remember him asking him why we hardly ever had people come to the house and he told me that because of everything he dealt with outside of the house, it was so nice to come home to a calm clean environment.

I think at that point I did not understand why, but now that I am older, it all makes sense.

I am generally care of who I allow to know where I live and who I allow to come to my home. And when I was in Vegas, I thought that I was careful. It’s funny that I had this conversation with a person that I did allow into my space, I don’t believe he understood what I was talking about, and he turned out to be the energy that I had a hard time getting out of my space…his energy and mindset. That was a lesson learned.

Daddy also told me that when I step outside the house, I was not only representing myself, but I was also representing my family and family name.  I sincerely took this seriously.  I to this day, I have told this story to my children and friends.

God-Mom: She always told me to look people in the eye, that I need to know how to speak to all kinds of people with respect. She told me to never bring the slang of my friends and schoolmates’ home to my parents of in her home. She raised me to understand how to carry myself as a lady and how to handle life as a single mother.

My God-Mom told me about the importance with building relationships with people to help me move forward in life. She really spoke to me about the kind of people I want in my life.

I had other elders in my life that raised me to understand life and relationship building. I’ve also had industry colleagues that share many gems with as I was learning my way around the Arts & Entertainment. I will say that I was blessed to have those type of people in my life that had such a positive influence over me.

So in the end, I can true say I have great people skills, I know how to maneuver amongst a variety groups of people and hold my own. I am respectful, well spoken and engaging, while being fully present. I have learned to trust my gut and be more mindful of who I let close to me and in my personal space. And I believe that I carry myself well.

I thank my Daddy and my God Mom, along with all the other people who have influenced
