Blog Challenge|60+|The Power of Unplugging

How do you know when it’s time to unplug? What do you do to make it happen?

Blog Challenge Response: The Power of Unplugging

I’ll be turning 65 in a few days, and I’d like to think that by now, I’ve developed a solid sense of self-awareness. Unplugging isn’t just something I should do — it’s something I’ve learned to prioritize as a way of life.

As a Cancer and an Empath, I naturally feel deeply. I absorb energy — both the light and the heavy. That makes unplugging not a luxury, but a necessity.

I work in healthcare, and whether I’ve spent the day on the phones or at the front desk, I’m constantly interacting with people in pain or distress. The moment I walk through my door, I head upstairs to my space. I lay down — not just to rest my body, but to quiet my mind. This has become a vital part of my weekly routine.

Over the years, I’ve gotten better at recognizing when I’m carrying energy that doesn’t belong to me. I still absorb it, but I no longer let it seep all the way into my spirit.

Another way I unplug is by going for a drive. Sometimes I have a destination, and other times I just let the road lead me. I’ll put on music or an audiobook and allow the rhythm or story to carry me away.

The truth is, I know myself. I know the signs — when I’ve been around too many people or too many clashing energies. That’s when I retreat. I get quiet. I isolate. Not out of avoidance, but out of necessity. Unplugging helps me return to myself.
