🎤 Aging in the Spotlight: Knowing When to Step Away
By Susan Koshi | Lady Flava, Registered Arts & Entertainment Blogger
Disclaimer:
I say all of this with deep respect for every artist still hustling to stay in the game. For many, performing is not just passion — it’s survival. It’s what they know, and often, what pays the bills. My intention is not to shame anyone, but to open an honest conversation about legacy, longevity, and what it means to age gracefully in this industry.
I say this not to be cruel, but because I care deeply — both personally and professionally.
As a registered arts and entertainment blogger, and someone who has spent years supporting independent talent, I’ve witnessed the beauty of greatness. I’ve seen artists in their prime — powerful, magnetic, unforgettable.
But I’ve also seen the other side. And it’s hard to watch.
🌟 What I Wish More Performers Understood
I don’t like seeing artists who have aged past the point of being able to give a strong performance.
I don’t say this lightly — but with a heart full of respect and real love for the craft.
I want to remember them at their peak.
I want to remember the goosebumps, the electricity, the command they had over the stage and the crowd.
I want their artistry to be honored by time — not eroded by it.
🎰 What Vegas Taught Me About Holding On
Living in Las Vegas made this even more real.
That city is full of older entertainers — legends, icons, and performers who once packed arenas — still taking the stage long after their time has passed. And they’re allowed to… not necessarily because they’re still delivering great performances, but because of their catalog.
Their music catalog — the collection of songs that went platinum, made charts, filled radio waves, and created lasting fan nostalgia — holds weight in the entertainment economy. Casinos and clubs know that tourists will come see a name they remember, even if the magic is no longer the same.
In fact, in Vegas, you don’t have to be performing at your best to land a residency — you just need a catalog that still holds value. That means name recognition, familiar hits, and the promise of nostalgia-driven ticket sales.
But even off the Strip, the story isn’t much different.
There are incredibly talented performers holding off-Strip residencies — but most of them aren’t young either. They’re seasoned artists, often in the second or third acts of their careers, still giving their all on stage.
The catch? Many are singing cover songs — not their own material. They’re leaning into familiar music that audiences already know and love. They’re being booked for comfort, not creativity.
One exception I saw was Motown Extreme, a tribute-style show that featured younger cast members, including a Jackson 5 performance. But that’s rare. Most off-Strip acts still revolve around nostalgia — delivered by artists who, themselves, are aging.
It made me ask:
When do we allow talent to shine in its truth — not just through borrowed memories?
🪞 This Isn’t About Age — It’s About Awareness
It’s not that artists shouldn’t grow old on stage.
It’s that they should evolve with awareness and grace.
When your voice no longer holds the note…
When your body struggles to move in rhythm…
When your energy no longer carries the crowd…
When people walk away with pity instead of praise…
That’s the moment to pause.
To ask:
“Am I still giving my best, or am I holding on out of fear?”
There’s a fine line between passion and pride.
And sometimes the most courageous thing a performer can do is step back before the curtain forces them to.
💡 What Could Aging Artists Do Instead?
Some of the most powerful transformations happen off the main stage.
Aging doesn’t mean fading away. It means shifting the spotlight with purpose.
Here are some graceful alternatives:
🎤 Storytelling sets – blend your music with the stories behind the songs. 🎶 Legacy recordings – intimate acoustic albums from the heart. 🪑 Mentorship – pour into the next generation of talent. 📚 Memoirs or blogs – share your journey, your lessons, your truth. 🎙️ Podcasts or panels – become a voice of wisdom and authenticity. 🎭 Host or curate – celebrate other artists while honoring your roots.
You can still shine — just in a new way.
🖤 Legacy Deserves Protection
Your legacy is your gift.
Don’t let it fade under dim lights and forced notes.
Leave us with the memory of your magic — not the discomfort of your decline.
I say this with love. With real talk. With the eyes of someone who has sat front row, stood backstage, and walked hand-in-hand with artists chasing dreams.
You don’t need to prove anything anymore.
You already did that.
Now maybe — just maybe — it’s time to pivot, protect your legacy, and let the world remember you…
At your best.

🎤 A Lady Flava Reflection
I’ll be honest… in many ways, I feel like I’ve aged out of the industry too.
The music and entertainment world has changed so much — sometimes beyond my understanding.
What once felt like community, creativity, and a shared love for the arts… now feels like algorithms, viral trends, and a race for visibility.
I’m not bitter. I’m not broken. But I’ve come to accept that my role, my voice, and my place in this space have shifted.
And maybe that’s okay.
Because stepping back doesn’t mean giving up — it means choosing a new way to show up, with grace, purpose, and presence.
That’s the journey I’m on now. And I’m learning to be at peace with it.
