The Power of Rest, Hydration & Movement as We Age

As someone who recently turned the magic number—65—I find myself reflecting on aging not just from a personal lens, but also through the eyes of a professional who has worked in the medical industry for the past eight years. Whether as a caregiver or supporting patients in clinical settings, I’ve seen firsthand how aging brings both wisdom and unique challenges.

There are three key wellness tips I hear medical professionals repeat regularly:

Get plenty of rest Drink water throughout the day (stop about 2 hours before bedtime) Keep moving

Simple, right? And yet, these three areas are where I’ve seen the most struggle—both in others and myself.

Rest

Many elders don’t get a full night’s sleep. Whether it’s tossing and turning, needing to get up to use the restroom, or constantly adjusting covers due to temperature changes, uninterrupted rest can be elusive. And yet, proper sleep is vital—it restores the mind and body, sharpens focus, and improves mood.

Hydration

Let’s be honest—many seniors don’t enjoy drinking water. But often, it’s not the taste; it’s the increased trips to the bathroom that come with it. That can be frustrating or even painful for those with mobility issues. Still, water is essential for flushing out toxins, keeping joints lubricated, and maintaining organ health. Lack of hydration can lead to bladder infections, which are not only uncomfortable but can also trigger confusion or dementia-like symptoms.

Movement

When you’re in pain or feeling stiff, the last thing you want to do is move—but movement is exactly what the body needs. Even small amounts of gentle motion help keep muscles flexible, joints mobile, and independence intact. As we age, getting in and out of bed or a chair can become more challenging. Walking even a short distance can feel like a marathon. But the truth is, the less we move, the harder it becomes to move.

Now that I am officially in this new chapter of life, I’ve noticed how easily I can fall into the same patterns. There are days when my body aches, and I just want to lie down. But I gently remind myself—I am now one of the elders. It’s my time to care for myself with intention and grace.

So, I invite you to join me:

Let’s encourage each other to get the rest our bodies crave, to hydrate even when we don’t feel like it, and to keep moving—even if it’s just a few stretches or a short walk to start.

Let’s live this chapter to the fullest.

Together.
