Creating a Memorable Experience: Indie Artists & Audience Connection

One thing I’ve always believed is that connection is everything. If you want to grow your audience and go beyond where you are today, you have to create a memorable experience—one that gets people talking, remembering, and sharing what they felt when they experienced you.

This belief comes from my own journey:

🌻 Opening and hosting Flava Coffee House, where I gave a platform to artists through open mics. 🌻 Spending over a decade on BlogTalkRadio (2009–2020), interviewing and promoting indie artists. 🌻 Working directly with independent artists and Vegas entertainment professionals. 🌻 Writing as a registered music & entertainment blogger/reviewer. 🌻 And being a huge supporter of the independent creative soul scene—locally, nationally, and internationally.

Through all of these experiences, I’ve witnessed what makes an audience lean in, what makes them remember, and what makes them come back for more.

Here are a few questions every indie artist should ask themselves:

🎶 1. What experience do you envision giving your audience—and what can you realistically pull off?

Every detail matters. From the stage setup, to the energy you bring, to the flow of your set. If you were in the audience, what would you want to feel?

🎶 2. How committed are you to mastering your craft?

It’s not just about raw talent. It’s about putting in the work, rehearsing, refining, and making sure you deliver a quality, engaging presentation every time.

🎶 3. Do you want to know how your audience felt?

Feedback matters. Are you willing to listen, to learn, and to adjust based on how your audience responds?

🎶 4. Is your project worth people paying for—and why?

Be honest with yourself. If someone spends their hard-earned money on your show, your music, your art—are they walking away feeling it was worth every dollar?

🎶 5. After the presentation, what’s next?

Are you building momentum, or are you leaving your audience hanging? Every performance should lead somewhere.

🎶 6. Are you ready to engage your audience and make them part of the journey?

Connection is not one-sided. How will you interact, invite, and inspire your audience so they feel they’re not just watching—you’re sharing the moment with them?

🎭 Energy & Engagement Are Universal

No matter what the art form is, audiences feed off of energy and engagement.

🎶 Music – the energy of a band or singer pulling the crowd into rhythm. 🎨 Art Showing – an artist engaging with viewers about their process, inviting them to see beyond the canvas. 📖 Book Reading – an author’s tone, pacing, and interaction making words leap off the page. 💃 Dance Performance – movement and expression pulling the audience into the story being told.

If you give your audience only the surface, that’s all they’ll walk away with. But if you pour passion into the experience, they’ll carry it with them—and tell others about it.

The indie scene is full of talent, but talent alone isn’t enough. It’s about connection. It’s about creating a memory so powerful that people want to talk about it, post about it, and bring others with them next time.

If you’re an artist who wants to grow—start here. Ask yourself these questions honestly. The answers will shape the path you’re on and the audience you’re building.
