Bean’s Corner: The Day the Wind Tried to Steal the Birds

Hello.

It’s Bean.

Today I was on tower duty.

My human was very busy with the talking box again. The one that makes her wear the thing on her head and say serious things like, “Let me look into that for you.”

It rang a lot today.

But I had more important matters to attend to.

Outside the tower window, the sky turned gray and the rain began to tap… tap… tap on the glass. At first it was just a little rain, but then the wind showed up.

And let me tell you something about the wind.

The wind does not play fair.

The tall cedar tree outside the tower started leaning and swaying like it was trying to dance. The branches moved and shook and I sat very still watching every single movement.

Because the birds were there.

Little birds.

They were hopping from branch to branch and chirping loudly like they had something very important to say. But when they tried to fly, the wind pushed them around like tiny feathers.

One little bird tried to lift off and the wind pushed him sideways. I leaned closer to the window.

Not to eat him.

Just to observe the situation.

A tower guardian must keep watch over these things.

Across the house, Ghini and Musty made a different choice. They curled up on the couch and decided the storm was none of their business.

But not me.

I stayed at the tower window.

The rain got louder. The wind pushed harder. The tree bent slowly like it was bowing to the storm.

And I watched every bird that dared to fly through it.

My human finished talking on the talking box later in the day. She took the thing off her head and looked tired.

But I had done my job.

The birds were still in the tree.

The storm was still outside.

And the tower remained secure.

You’re welcome.
