Staying on Top of My Health

Monday’s A Taste of Flava

I woke up this morning in severe pain, especially in my right hip.

Yes, I wanted to call off work. But I need to save my PTO for the doctor appointments leading into surgery, so I made myself a cup of hot coffee, settled into my chair, and logged on.

I also sent an update to my primary care provider. I asked her to write a letter supporting my continued need to work from home—and I clearly explained why.

I cannot walk safely or comfortably. I am no longer driving, so my daughter must take me to my medical appointments. I also work for the same clinic as two of the doctors who have been treating and supporting me through this hip pain. Their chart notes are available for my primary care provider to review and use when writing the letter.

I have learned that I must stay on top of my healthcare and continue being my own advocate.

That is why I stress these things so much in my Health and Wellness blogs:

Understand your body.

Advocate for your healthcare needs.

Create a wellness binder.

Keep track of your providers, appointments, medications, diagnoses, and treatment plans.

Everything I write about, I practice in my own life.

I am passionate about health and wellness in our seasoned years because our needs change—and we cannot afford to stop paying attention. Speak up when something doesn’t feel right. Ask questions. Follow up. Make sure your providers understand not only your diagnosis, but how it is affecting your daily life.

Please be mindful of your health and your needs.

You know your body—and your voice matters.
