A Taste of Flava
The Message Is More Than the Words
Dear Friends,
I know I talk about communication a lot. I do because it is one of the ways we connect with each otherâand sometimes, one of the ways we lose that connection.
I often find myself thinking about what works and what doesnât. Have you ever noticed that the disconnect may not be what someone said, but how they said it? The tone of voice. The choice of words. The way a message lands, even when the person speaking didnât mean for it to hurt or offend.
The same words can feel completely different depending on how theyâre delivered. âCan you help me understand?â can open a conversation. Said with impatience, even a reasonable question can sound like criticism.
And once we feel criticized, we may stop hearing the message. We start preparing our response. We defend ourselves. The conversation that could have brought us closer begins to pull us apart.
Thatâs why I believe it helps to pause before we respond. Just a moment. Long enough to ask ourselves: Am I hearing what this person means, or am I reacting to how it sounded? And before I answer, can I choose words that will help us understand each other?
That pause wonât fix every conversation. Weâre human, and sometimes we speak too quickly or get our tone wrong. But we can try again. We can clarify what we meant, listen to how it felt to the other person, and find a better way to say it.
We live in a loud world. There is already so much noise, so much reacting, and so many people talking over one another. Maybe we can each pay a little more attention to how we engageâto our tone, our word choice, and the way we listen.
Peaceful communication doesnât mean avoiding hard conversations. It means trying to have them in a way that leaves room for understanding.
Before you respond today, take a breath. Ask yourself: Will my words help us connectâor add more noise?
