Real Talk: What Does Your Style of Dress Say About You?
Can you tell something about a person’s personality by the way they dress? Maybe—or maybe not.
I do think clothing choices can tell a story. A crisp, tailored outfit. Wrinkled and laid-back. Dark colors, bright colors, patterns, comfortable shoes, designer labels, current trends, or casual clothes. We notice these things, but they don’t tell us everything about the person wearing them.
There are so many reasons we choose what we wear: the occasion, the kind of job we have, our personal style, comfort, cost, culture, and what we need to do that day. Some people dress mainly for themselves. Others may enjoy dressing for the response or impression they hope to make.
And where we shop is part of the story, too. Designer stores, bargain shopping, thrift stores, mainstream retailers, family-affordable stores, or online—there are lots of ways to find what feels right for us.
I was thinking about clothes because I’m looking forward to the possibility of walking more in the new year. I started wondering: Will I keep the style people know me for, or will I switch it up a little? I honestly don’t know yet, but I’m excited to see what this next chapter brings.
What do you think about clothing and accessories? How did you develop your style, and how does it make you feel?
Research has explored whether what we wear can influence how we feel or focus. But that doesn’t mean we can look at someone’s outfit and know their whole personality. (sciencedirect.com, sciencedirect.com)
