Did Somebody Change the Rules and Forget to Tell Me? 🤔
I’m kind of tired of writing about my pain and my upcoming surgery. Yes, I’m so excited about finally getting new hips. Girl, you know I’m ready!
But there is more to my life than pain and recovery. No, this does not mean I’m going to stop sharing my journey. Today, I just want to go in a different direction.
You know, I’ve come to realize more things about myself. I still have opinions. I still notice things. Things that once upon a time mattered—or at least I thought they did. But nowadays, sometimes it feels like nobody cares what I might think about something.
And I have to ask myself: How much energy am I going to spend being bothered?
I worried about work standards slipping when the job itself didn’t seem concerned. Here I was, carrying frustration about something that wasn’t keeping anybody else up at night.
I had to learn to let that go.
That has been a lesson for me, because when you care about how something is done, you don’t just stop caring because someone tells you to. But you can wear yourself out trying to hold everybody to a standard they don’t seem interested in holding themselves to.
So many of the morals and values I grew up with no longer seem to be considered a way of life. Now they’re old. Outdated. Wrong. Sometimes even considered oppressive.
And I’m sitting here wondering… when did all this happen? Who held the meeting? And why didn’t I get an invitation? 🤔🤣
I’m not saying everything from back in the day was right. There were things that needed to change. But sometimes I’m trying to understand what was actually wrong with a value—and what simply became unpopular.
Can we at least have that conversation?
I would let myself get frustrated about things without realizing that other people didn’t care that those things mattered to me. I could explain myself all day, and we would still be standing in two different places.
So, I’m getting better at letting go and not paying so much attention to everything that irks my spirit.
I still have my standards. I’m learning where to spend my energy.
But maybe somebody needs to write down the rules of the day. Put them in a little book for some of us 📓—yes, I know, outdated—and on an app for everybody else. 📱
And please send a notification when the rules change. Don’t have me out here finding out the hard way! 🤣
Do you feel like things have changed around you?
When I think about my experience working in Las Vegas, that work environment felt more in line with my standards and mindset. I didn’t experience younger people so openly disputing the older generation the way I sometimes do here.
That was my experience. Seattle feels like a whole different mindset.
Seattle has people of all ages and backgrounds, with so many different ways of looking at life. We are open and welcoming to many populations that may not feel as embraced in other places.
There is something to appreciate in that. And there is a lot to navigate when everybody brings a different idea of what respect, responsibility, and acceptable behavior look like.
What feels normal to one person can have another person saying, “Wait a minute. Since when?” 🤣
Life as a senior citizen, trying to keep up with changing times, can be exhausting when you don’t know the rules.
And sometimes I wonder if we’re all even working from the same set!
Help… maybe we need our own country. 🤣
Then again, we’d probably get over there and start arguing about the rules, too!
Where are my seasoned friends? What do you think about what I wrote? Have you had to let go of things that still matter to you because you got tired of being frustrated?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
