Life|65|Covid is Still Around

Why I’m Not Afraid of Covid Anymore

I lived through the craziness of Covid.

When the pandemic first arrived, none of us truly understood what we were facing. I cried so hard the day I realized I had sat with a stroke patient for 10 days straight, only to learn they had contracted Covid. I tested negative at that time, but my heart was broken.

The rehabilitation hospital I was staffing nurses and CNAs for ended up taking on the overflow of Covid patients from the main hospitals. Overnight, everything changed. Wearing masks, face shields, gloves, and gowns became a way of life. Covid patients were only steps away from my office door.

And then it hit me personally. I caught Covid-19 and was so sick that I was out of work for almost two weeks. It was a frightening and exhausting time, but by God’s grace, I recovered.

Still, what I witnessed during those months will never leave me. Families sitting outside their loved one’s windows, talking to them on the phone instead of holding their hand. Patients going out the back door in black body bags. People I knew, and people I knew of, gone forever.

I will never forget the loss, the heartbreak, the sacrifices that so many made.

And yet, here I am today — no longer afraid. I have lived through the worst of it. I have received my vaccinations and boosters. I know what my body has endured, and I know what my spirit can carry.

Today, Covid is not a source of fear for me. Instead, it is a reminder:

✨ Of how strong we can be in the face of the unknown.

✨ Of how precious life is, and how quickly it can change.

✨ Of why I choose calm, peace, and faith — no matter what comes.

I pray that as a world, we never forget what we lived through. Not the grief, not the sacrifices, not the lessons. And I pray that we carry forward a deeper appreciation for life, for health, and for each other. 🙏

“I chose to write this reflection today because I was just informed that someone I know has tested positive for Covid. It reminded me of where we’ve been, and why I carry calm, peace, and faith forward.”

Working in healthcare, I’ve always had early and easy access to vaccinations and boosters. It became part of my responsibility, part of protecting both myself and the patients I served. But not everyone has that same access or urgency. For those outside of healthcare, it can be harder to stay up to date — and sometimes it takes Covid hitting close to home for people to realize how important those layers of protection really are.
