Lately, I’ve been sitting with the difference between being busy and being emotionally unavailable — and what that looks like in today’s world. This reflection isn’t about blaming anyone, but more about giving grace to ourselves and others as we navigate life’s noise, expectations, and personal seasons of healing.
Busy or Distracted? A Real Talk Reflection
How many times have we told someone that we’re busy… that we don’t have time?
But are we really busy — or are we just distracted?
I’ve been around people who constantly say they’re working on an upcoming project… yet nothing ever materializes. Are they actually busy creating, or is life simply pulling them in other directions?
Truthfully, I’ve found myself in that space too. These days, if I don’t feel up to engaging, I just don’t respond. Not to be rude — I just no longer feel the need to explain why I’m not available to connect. It’s not about them. It’s me. I’m in a season of healing, and I’ve pulled in.
But it does make me wonder — is saying “I’m busy” just the easier way out of interaction?
I think more and more people have quietly made themselves unavailable. Maybe social media plays a role — we now learn what’s going on in someone’s life through posts and updates rather than conversations.
When I was coming up, we called each other. We visited our friends and family. We made plans. We spent real, in-person time. And sometimes… I think those were truly the good old days.
Today, distractions are everywhere. Social media, stress, survival. It’s easy to “engage” online while keeping people at a distance in real life.
So I ask: Are you really busy… or is life just heavy right now?
And if you don’t want to engage, what’s the better approach — if any?
I say this with love: Don’t take it personal. Life is hard for many of us. Most of the time, it has nothing to do with you — and everything to do with what someone is facing within themselves.
Busy or distracted… it’s just called Life.
And here’s what I’ve come to cherish: You have those people who, no matter how long it’s been, when you connect — it’s real. That’s what matters. Not the distance. Not the silence. But the genuine conversations and moments when they happen.
