ATasteOfFlava|I Like Myself

A Taste of Flava This Friday Morning

The first thought I had when I got up this morning was simple:

I really like myself.

And I’m proud of the decisions I have made for myself at this stage in my life.

I’m still learning.
I’m still growing in knowledge and understanding.
I’m still paying attention to what life is trying to teach me.

But I also know this about myself:

I represent myself well.

I love the era I was raised in. I believe we were taught with an expectation of what kind of people we should become. There were standards. There were lessons. And we had elders around us who mirrored many of those qualities through the way they lived.

That shaped me.

And at this point in my life, I am not going to make excuses for why I am the way I am, nor am I going to apologize for it.

I will shift when shifting is needed.
I will grow when growth is needed.
I will listen when there is something I need to understand.

But I also expect that from the people I engage with.

Different generations are not always going to think alike, communicate alike, or move through the world alike.

And that is okay.

What becomes exhausting is expecting another generation to completely abandon their way and adhere to ours.

That is too much.

Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is meet somewhere in the middle.

We can bring what we know.
They can bring what they know.
And maybe somewhere between the two, there is understanding.

So this morning, I’m sitting pretty well up here in my Tower.

I started the morning with some breathing issues and coughing because of the haze and smoke outside. Thankfully, it is no longer sitting directly outside my window, and I have my fan on my desk blowing past me while I work.

And even with all of that going on, I came back to that first thought I had this morning:

I really like myself.

There is something powerful about reaching a place in life where you can say that and mean it.

Not because everything is perfect.
Not because you have everything figured out.
But because you are comfortable with the person you have become while still leaving room for the person you are becoming.

If you are happy with where you are in life, hold onto that.

It is so important.

Happy Friday
