RealTalk| The Shift In Eating

Monday Real Talk

Whatever Happened to Family Dinner?

When I was growing up, dinner wasn’t just about eating.

It was about gathering around the table.

It was where we talked about our day, laughed together, solved problems, listened to one another, and simply enjoyed being together.

The meal itself wasn’t what made it special.

It was the connection.

Then life changed.

Fast food became more common. Drive-thrus became convenient. Eventually came food delivery, DoorDash, Uber Eats, and every restaurant imaginable arriving right at your front door.

As a single woman living in Las Vegas, I loved to cook for myself. Every now and then I’d grab takeout or fast food, but I genuinely enjoyed preparing my own meals. Cooking was relaxing, and there was something satisfying about creating a meal from scratch.

Today, my life looks very different.

Because of my mobility disability, standing for long periods and walking can be difficult. Cooking isn’t always realistic anymore.

When it’s just my granddaughter and me, we’ll order DoorDash. Sometimes we choose healthy meals. Sometimes it’s something simple. It works for where I am in life, and I’m grateful it’s an option.

My life has shifted.

But every once in a while, I find myself missing those evenings when families gathered around the dinner table.

Today, many families work different schedules. Kids have activities. People eat in their bedrooms, in front of the television, at their desks, or while driving to the next place they need to be.

Life has become louder.

Life has become faster.

And somewhere along the way, many families stopped sitting down together.

This isn’t about judging anyone.

Every family has different responsibilities, different routines, and different challenges.

I’m simply wondering…

What have we gained?

And what have we lost?

Sometimes I think we miss the conversations more than we miss the home-cooked meals.

Maybe it’s not really about eating at the table.

Maybe it’s about making time to connect with the people we love.

I’d love to hear from you.

How do meals look in your home in 2026?

Do you cook?

Do you order out?

Do you still gather around the table?

Or has your family created a different tradition that works for your lifestyle?

As for me…

My life has shifted.

And that’s okay.

I’m simply appreciating each season of life for what it is.

Blessings,

Lady Flava 🌻
