Finding Balance Between Generations (Part 2 of Finding My Place in a Revolving Door World)
In Part 1, I shared my thoughts on how today’s world feels like a revolving door—rules and standards constantly shifting, facts becoming interpretations, and identities being redefined. At 65, I find myself reflecting on the foundation I grew up with versus the fluidity I see today.
But here’s what I’ve been sitting with since then: what’s missing most is balance and respect between generations.
When I was coming up, life had a foundation. Elders set the standards, and those who came after followed. It gave life a sense of clarity—even if the rules weren’t always perfect, there was structure.
Today, young people are exposed to so much more than I ever was. They navigate endless information, new theories, shifting truths, and evolving identities. There is brilliance in their openness and freedom, but there’s also confusion in how quickly everything changes.
The truth is, both sides have something valuable. Elders carry wisdom, resilience, and lessons from lived experience. Younger generations bring fresh perspectives, creativity, and courage to challenge old systems. What we need is not one or the other, but both—woven together with respect.
Without that bridge, we risk losing the connection that gives life its richness. Balance and respect don’t mean we will always agree, but they mean we choose to listen, learn, and value one another across generations.
That’s how we move forward—not by closing the door on the past or spinning endlessly in the new, but by finding steady ground in the exchange between seasoned souls and rising voices. 🌻
