When Brilliance Defies Labels — And So Do We
Jon Batiste has often been called a musical genius. People describe the way he hears, feels, and expresses music as something rare — almost otherworldly. Some even speculate about labels: savant, autistic, neurodivergent. But Jon himself has never claimed those words. What we see is simply a man whose brilliance refuses to fit into categories.
And that got me thinking. I’ve always felt different, too. Over time I came to identify as an empath — someone deeply sensitive to the energy of people, places, and things. I can walk into a room and feel its mood. Crowds drain me. Nature restores me. Language, art, and history light me up, while quizzes and math leave me anxious. My brain has always worked in ways that don’t feel like everyone else’s.
Sometimes the traits I live with overlap with what people now call neurodivergence. And you know what? I would be okay with that identity, too. Because for me, the label is less important than the truth: I am learning to honor my wiring instead of fighting it.
What I see in Jon Batiste — and in myself — is a reminder that brilliance, sensitivity, and difference don’t need to be explained away. They can simply be. Not every gift, not every quirk, not every way of being needs a category.
The real work is learning to respect uniqueness, whether it’s a public figure who makes music in colors, a child with ADHD discovering their own path, or an empath who needs to step outside and breathe in the quiet. Brilliance, in all its forms, often defies labels. And maybe that’s what makes it beautiful. 🌻
