Cough CPR: Fact or Myth? Why We Must Be Cautious With Social Media Health Posts

We’ve all seen those posts on social media that say things like “If you’re alone and having a heart attack, just cough hard every few seconds to save yourself.” The problem? This advice is not accurate and could be dangerous if people believe it instead of calling for help right away.

The Truth About “Cough CPR”

“Cough CPR” is a technique sometimes used in very specific, controlled hospital situations when a patient is already connected to heart monitors and guided by medical staff.

It is not recommended by the American Heart Association or other medical organizations for people at home, at work, or driving a car.

In fact, trying it might delay you from calling 911, taking aspirin, or getting real life-saving treatment.

What You Should Do If You Suspect a Heart Attack

Call 911 (or local emergency services) immediately.

Stop what you’re doing — sit or lie down in a safe place.

Chew an aspirin (if not allergic and if you’ve been advised it’s safe).

Rest and wait for emergency help — don’t try to drive yourself.

Know the symptoms: chest discomfort, shortness of breath, sweating, pain in jaw/arm/back, nausea, extreme fatigue (especially for women).

Why Fact-Checking Matters

It’s easy to hit “share” on something that sounds helpful — especially when the post promises to “save a life.” But health information is too important to risk spreading without checking reliable sources like:

American Heart Association (heart.org) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (cdc.gov)

Cleveland Clinic or Mayo Clinic

By taking an extra moment to confirm accuracy, you can ensure the information you pass along truly helps — and doesn’t unintentionally cause harm.

Closing Thought

In this digital age, we are all messengers. Let’s make sure the messages we send empower others with truth, not myths. One careful share can protect a life.
