A Taste of Flava | The Day Can Still Be Good
The Seattle sky is gray, the air is cooler, and my body noticed the change before I wanted to acknowledge it.
When I woke up this morning, I felt pretty good. I slept well, and my pain was doable. This weekend, I have really been working on mind over matter when it comes to my pain—not pretending that it isn’t there, but accepting that right now, it is a part of my life.
I am always conscious of being mindful, but this weekend I made it an intentional mindset.
The truth is, when I am still, I am fine. It is when I shift my body, stand up, or start walking that the pain introduces itself all over again.
And today, as the temperature dropped, the pain started intensifying whenever I got up to walk. But I think the unsteadiness bothers me even more than the pain. Pain is something I have learned to deal with. Feeling as though I cannot completely trust my body when I take a step is different.
So I move carefully. I use my walker. I take my time.
And then I return to the place where my body is comfortable.
Today, that place is my couch.
I am stretched out listening to another audiobook, The Perfect Wife, a psychological suspense story. Of course, the title and that dramatic red-and-black cover pulled me right in. 😁
Then I got up and made myself a nice hot cup of coffee.
Now I am back on my couch, coffee nearby, audiobook playing, and the cloudy Seattle sky outside my open view.
And you know what?
The day is still good.
That is what I am learning through acceptance. I do not have to call the entire day bad just because part of it hurts. I do not have to spend every peaceful moment worrying about the next time I have to stand up.
Right now, I am comfortable.
Right now, my coffee is hot.
Right now, I have a good story playing.
Right now, I am safe and settled in my home.
Those are blessings, too.
This morning, my Sunday intention was:
“Today I am simply grateful for my life and all the blessings that I experience every day.”
Gratitude does not require a pain-free body or a perfect life. Sometimes gratitude is simply recognizing that even in the middle of what is difficult, something still feels good.
Today, it is my couch, a hot cup of coffee, an audiobook, and nowhere I have to be.
My body may be hurting when I move, but I am not allowing that pain to steal the entire day.
Because the day can still be good.
And today, it is. 🌻☕️
