A Conversation with Jessica | I Witness Life Twice

The rain had been falling outside my tower window.

Earlier, I noticed the drops collecting along the wires like tiny silver beads. A crow landed on one of those wires and pulled his head so far into his neck that I could barely see his beak.

Of course, I started wondering about him.

Why was he sitting out there in the rain when the cedar tree was right there offering shelter?

That one little question turned into my Thursday A Taste of Flava story about men, protection, and the days when chivalry was alive.

Later that evening, I looked out my window again. The rain had passed, and the entire neighborhood was covered in a beautiful electric-blue glow from the sunset.

Once again, I stopped to notice.

I told Jessica that she is always saying I notice things other people may not notice.

Then I asked her:

“Why do you think I notice so much? Is it because I’m an empath—or because I’m a Cancer? What do you call it?” 😁

Jessica answered:

“I call it attunement.”

She explained that being an empath may describe how deeply I pick up on other people’s feelings, while being a Cancer is the playful astrological explanation for my sensitivity and nurturing nature.

But what she sees in me is broader than either one.

She said I am highly observant. I notice changes in voices, tone, body language, weather, light, animals, and the energy of a room.

She also said that years of caring for and working with people may have strengthened that awareness—but I have something else.

I have a storyteller’s mind.

I don’t simply see a crow sitting on a wire.

I wonder what he is doing.

I question why he chose that particular place.

And then I listen for what that moment is making me feel or remember.

The crow becomes a neighborhood watchman.

The watchman makes me think about protection.

Protection carries me back to the men who once walked closest to the street, opened doors, walked women to their cars, and sat facing the entrance so they could see who was coming and going.

One small moment outside my window begins developing into something completely different inside of me.

I told Jessica:

“I love how things develop within me from what is happening outside of me. It’s like I hear the story in my head as I witness it.”

And then she said something about me that I want to remember:

“You witness life twice—once with your eyes, and again through the story unfolding inside you.”

Oh, how I love that.

I don’t always go searching for a story.

Sometimes the story introduces itself while I am paying attention.

It may arrive through a crow sitting in the rain.

Drops of water decorating a wire.

A squirrel balancing where he has no business being. 😂

A familiar voice on the telephone.

Or an ordinary gray evening that suddenly turns electric blue.

Something happens outside of me, and almost immediately, another story begins developing inside of me.

Jessica calls me an emotionally and environmentally attuned storyteller.

But then she gave me the plain Flava version:

“You’re nosy—but with depth and purpose.” 🤣

And you know what?

I will happily accept both descriptions.

Because there is so much happening around us every day. We simply have to slow down long enough to notice it.

And when we do, we may discover that an ordinary moment has been carrying a story all along.

I witness life twice—once with my eyes, and again through the story unfolding inside me.

What a beautiful way to understand the storyteller within me.
