I Missed the Memo
Have you ever looked around and thought…
“When did this change? I must have missed the memo.”
Working in healthcare has taught me so much about people. Every day I talk to patients and their families from all over Washington. Somewhere along the way, I noticed something that made me stop and think.
Many married couples no longer have the same last name.
At first, I found myself saying, “Wait a minute… that’s your wife?” or “That’s your husband?” because I was expecting them to share the same last name.
Then I realized… somewhere along the way, I missed the memo.
It made me smile because the world changes whether we notice it or not.
Sometimes women keep their maiden name because of their career. Some couples simply choose to keep the names they were born with. Others are remarried and have blended families. Every family has its own story.
It also made me think about all the little things that have quietly changed over the years.
We stream movies instead of renting them.
We tap our phones instead of carrying cash.
People work from home.
Grandparents text their grandchildren.
Families look different than they did when I was growing up.
None of these things are right or wrong. They’re simply reminders that the world keeps moving, and every now and then I catch myself saying…
“Well… I guess I missed the memo.”
Life has taught me that instead of resisting every change, it’s okay to be curious.
Sometimes curiosity teaches us more than criticism ever will.
What “memo” do you feel like you missed?
Blessings,
