RealTalk| The Grumpy Person

Tuesday Real Talk

What Causes Someone To Be Grumpy?

Today I had a lengthy conversation with a patient who was dealing with extreme pain.

Nothing I said seemed to ease her mind or her frustration.

The hold music was horrible.

The wait time was too long.

The phone options didn’t work.

The doctor she wanted wasn’t available.

She didn’t want to come into Seattle.

By the end of the conversation, I honestly felt like my breathing was bothering her.

Yes… it was that kind of conversation.

But instead of becoming upset with her, I found myself wondering what she must be going through.

Living with constant pain can wear a person down physically, mentally, and emotionally. I truly felt for her and silently wished her healing.

It also made me think about a bigger question.

Do you think her grumpiness was only because of her pain?

Or do you think some people naturally have a grumpier personality, regardless of what is happening in their lives?

Of course, there are many situations that can affect our mood.

  • Not feeling well.
  • Living with chronic pain.
  • Stress.
  • Lack of sleep.
  • Feeling overwhelmed.
  • Disappointment.
  • Burnout.
  • Feeling lonely or dissatisfied with life.

Sometimes there may even be medical reasons. Nutrient deficiencies such as low vitamin B12, iron, magnesium, or vitamin D, certain medications, hormonal changes, depression, anxiety, and other health conditions can all contribute to irritability.

Knowing that doesn’t mean hurtful behavior is okay.

We are all responsible for how we treat other people.

At the same time, I think it reminds us that we never really know what someone else may be carrying.

Maybe the cashier had a sleepless night.

Maybe your coworker just received difficult news.

Maybe the person on the other end of the phone has been living with pain for months or years.

Compassion doesn’t mean accepting disrespect.

It simply means trying to understand that there may be a story behind someone’s behavior.

What do you think?

Do you believe some people are naturally grumpy?

Or do you think most grumpiness is a response to life’s circumstances?

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Blessings,
Lady Flava 🌻
