How Do New Movements Begin?

Today I listened to a woman ask,

“Why do people thank veterans? Are we buying into the military? There are people who really deserve our thanks.”

It made me stop and think.

Not because I agree with her.

Because it reminded me that every movement begins with an idea. One person asks a question, others agree, and before long, more and more people begin looking at something differently.

I happen to disagree.

I believe we should thank anyone who serves others in meaningful ways.

Veterans.

Teachers.

Doctors.

Nurses.

Caregivers.

Firefighters.

Police officers.

Utility workers.

The person who picks up our garbage every week.

The cashier who brightens your day.

Gratitude isn’t limited.

I don’t have to stop thanking one person to appreciate another.

What concerns me isn’t that people ask questions. Healthy conversations are important.

What concerns me is when appreciation becomes a competition.
