Not All Protein Is Created Equal

Lately, I have been trying to become more intentional about adding protein to my diet. As we age, protein becomes increasingly important for maintaining muscle strength, supporting our immune system, healing, and helping us stay independent.

While grocery shopping, I started noticing all of the convenient protein snack packs. Many include cheese, crackers, fruit, nuts, a hard-boiled egg, and sometimes summer sausage. That got me thinking…

Is all protein equally healthy?

The answer is… not exactly.

Protein is important, but where it comes from matters too.

Fresh foods like eggs, chicken, fish, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, beans, and lentils are excellent sources of protein because they are less processed and provide many nutrients our bodies need.

Processed meats such as pepperoni, summer sausage, salami, beef sticks, jerky, and many deli meats also contain protein, but they are often higher in sodium, saturated fat, and preservatives. That doesn’t mean you can never enjoy them. It simply means they may be better enjoyed occasionally rather than becoming your primary source of protein.

One thing I have learned is that healthy eating isn’t about perfection. It’s about making thoughtful choices most of the time.

If a protein snack pack helps you eat lunch instead of skipping a meal, that’s still a positive choice. But when possible, choosing whole, less processed foods more often can better support your body as you age.

I’m learning right alongside you. Every trip to the grocery store is another opportunity to ask questions and make small changes that can have a lasting impact on our health.

Our future selves will thank us.
