We Didn’t Have a Name for It

This is solely my opinion based on living through several generations and watching communication evolve.

Growing up, we didn’t have a term for it.

We simply learned what was appropriate depending on the situation.

You spoke differently to your grandparents than you did your friends.

You spoke differently at work than you did at home.

You knew you wouldn’t talk to a judge, your pastor, your teacher, or your boss the same way you talked to your best friend.

No one had to explain it.

It was simply understanding your audience and respecting the setting.

Today, I hear the term code switching used much more often.

To me, the concept isn’t new.

The terminology is.

I don’t see it as pretending to be someone you’re not.

I see it as understanding that different situations call for different ways of communicating.

Doctors don’t speak to patients the same way they speak to other physicians.

Teachers don’t talk to kindergarten students the same way they talk to college students.

Most of us naturally adjust how we communicate every day.

Not because we’re being fake…

But because we’re trying to communicate in the most effective way for the person in front of us.

Maybe every generation simply has a different name for the same idea.
