Structure, With the Ability to Shift

Earlier today in my Health & Wellness post, I talked about structure — how some people thrive in structured environments while others feel better going with the flow.

That conversation made me realize something about myself.

I’ve always liked having a foundation to work from.

Not rigid rules.
Not micromanagement.

But a clear starting point.

A system.
A rhythm.
A process that makes sense.

When I worked in the hospital in Las Vegas, everything had a structure. If something was urgent, there was a protocol. If a doctor needed another doctor STAT, we knew exactly what to do. You didn’t sit around wondering who should respond. You acted.

Even with the challenges I had with a couple of supervisors there, I can admit something now:

I liked the structure.

There was a foundation.

And when there is a foundation, it actually makes it easier to adapt when things shift — because you’re not starting from chaos.

Lately I’ve noticed something else about myself.

I tend to get along well with people who also appreciate clarity and structure in how they work. People who communicate directly and operate within systems.

What challenges me more are environments where everything feels reactive and unstructured — where urgency isn’t clearly defined and people are figuring things out in the moment.

That kind of environment can feel exhausting.

But here’s the truth I realized today:

What works best for me isn’t rigid structure.

What works best for me is a foundation with the ability to shift.

A place where the expectations are clear, but people are still flexible enough to adapt when life happens.

Because life will always shift.

Health shifts.
Workplaces shift.
People shift.

But when you have a solid foundation underneath you, it’s a lot easier to move with those changes without losing your balance.

So today’s Real Talk reflection is simple:

Do you function best with structure?
Or do you prefer complete freedom and flexibility?

Or maybe you’re like me…

You like having a foundation to stand on — with the ability to shift when life calls for it.
