Everyone Needs A Mentor And A System
As I get older, I realize how many people helped shape the way I think, work, and navigate life.
Some were family members.
Some were teachers.
Some were supervisors.
Some were coworkers.
Some probably had no idea I was paying attention.
But I was.
One of the greatest gifts a person can receive is exposure to someone with experience. Not because they know everything, but because they have already walked roads you haven’t traveled yet.
I remember being taught to keep information organized and accessible. Having resources close by meant less confusion, less frustration, and fewer mistakes. Years later, I still use many of those habits.
Over time, I learned something else.
A mentor can share wisdom, but eventually you must create a system that works for your own life.
Some people use calendars.
Some use notebooks.
Some use checklists.
Some use reminders on their phones.
Some use folders, binders, spreadsheets, or sticky notes.
The system doesn’t matter as much as finding one that works for you.
I have watched people struggle because they were trying to remember everything.
I have watched people become less stressed when they stopped relying on memory alone and created a process they could trust.
Life moves fast.
Work moves fast.
Responsibilities pile up.
Appointments, deadlines, bills, family obligations, and everyday tasks compete for our attention.
A good system helps carry some of that load.
A mentor teaches you lessons.
A system helps you apply them.
I think both are important.
The people who came before us often leave clues. They show us better ways to communicate, stay organized, solve problems, and handle challenges.
The question is whether we pay attention.
I am grateful for the seasoned people who shared their knowledge with me throughout my life. Their wisdom helped shorten my learning curve more times than I can count.
And I am equally grateful for the systems I have built over the years that help my days flow more smoothly.
We all need someone who has walked the road before us.
And we all need a system that helps us navigate the road we’re currently on.
Learn from others.
Create what works for you.
Life gets a little easier when you have both.
