RealTalk|Who Influences Your Thinking

Tuesday Real Talk

Who Influences How You Think?

We live in a very loud world.

Every day we’re surrounded by news outlets, social media posts, podcasts, YouTube channels, blogs, influencers, family conversations, coworkers, and friends. Everyone has an opinion, and many people present those opinions as facts.

Lately I’ve been asking myself a simple question.

Who do I allow to influence how I think?

When I read something on social media, I usually don’t accept it at face value. Somewhere along the line, I developed the habit of fact-checking. If someone tells me something that doesn’t quite sound right, I make a mental note and look into it myself.

Why?

Because false information spreads fast.

Sometimes it spreads because someone intentionally wants to mislead people. Other times it’s because someone shares something without checking whether it’s actually true. One person reposts it, another repeats it, and before long it begins to sound like a fact simply because so many people are saying it.

I’ve also noticed something else.

People seem to jump on bandwagons very quickly.

Whether it’s politics, entertainment, health, business, or someone’s personal life, many people form strong opinions before they’ve heard the whole story—or before they’ve looked for reliable information.

It makes me wonder…

Why are we so quick to believe what fits our feelings instead of slowing down long enough to ask questions?

Maybe it’s because we’re busy.

Maybe we trust the people sharing the information.

Maybe we simply want to belong to a group that thinks like we do.

Or maybe we’ve forgotten that it’s okay to say, “I don’t know enough about this yet.”

There is nothing wrong with changing your opinion when you learn something new. In fact, that’s called growth.

I don’t want to live in an echo chamber where I only hear opinions that match my own. I want to be willing to listen, learn, ask questions, and separate facts from assumptions.

The more divided our world becomes, the more important critical thinking becomes.

Before we share a story…
Before we repeat a rumor…
Before we judge another person…

Maybe we should pause and ask ourselves:

“Do I actually know this to be true?”

Sometimes the strongest opinion we can have is the one we’ve taken the time to research.
