RealTalk|Trusting Online Information

How Do We Know What Information to Trust Anymore?

There was a time when finding information felt much simpler.

If you wanted to learn something, you opened an encyclopedia, read a newspaper, watched the evening news, or asked someone you trusted.

Today we have the opposite problem.

We don’t have too little information.

We have too much.

Search the same question online and you may find ten completely different answers.

One doctor recommends one treatment.

Another doctor disagrees.

One article says coffee is good for you.

Another says it isn’t.

One person swears a supplement changed their life.

Someone else says it’s dangerous.

So…

How do we know what to believe?

I don’t think we should automatically trust everything we read online.

But I also don’t think we should automatically dismiss it.

Instead, I think we need to become better thinkers.

When I read something online, I ask myself a few simple questions.

Who is sharing this information?

Do they have experience or education in this area?

Can I find this same information somewhere else?

If only one person is saying it and nobody else is, I become cautious.

Is this trying to educate me or sell me something?

Sometimes the loudest voices are connected to products, clicks, or advertising.

Does it make sense?

Sometimes our own common sense is one of the best filters we have.

I also believe it’s okay to say…

“I don’t know enough about this yet.”

There is nothing wrong with taking more time before forming an opinion.

We live in a world where information moves faster than ever before.

Maybe our responsibility isn’t to keep up with all of it.

Maybe it’s to slow down long enough to separate information from misinformation.

Knowledge is powerful.

Wisdom is knowing how to evaluate that knowledge before accepting it as truth.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

How do you decide what information you trust?
