Why Laughter Is Part of My Survival Kit
Some days, laughter isn’t about being funny.
It’s about staying human.
Life can get heavy fast. Work stress. Family stuff. World stuff. The kind of weight that settles into your shoulders and doesn’t always leave when the day is over. I’ve learned that when things start stacking up, laughter gives my body and spirit a break.
It doesn’t erase what’s hard.
But it loosens the grip.
Laughter has a way of interrupting stress before it takes over. It helps the body release tension, lowers stress hormones, and even triggers endorphins — the body’s natural feel-good medicine. Sometimes that’s the difference between pain tightening and pain easing. Between overwhelm and clarity.
I’ve noticed this about myself:
When I laugh — even briefly — my nervous system settles. My breathing deepens. My perspective shifts just enough to remind me that I’m still okay.
Laughter also creates connection. A shared laugh with a coworker, a friend, or a loved one can soften a moment that feels too sharp. It breaks tension. It reminds us we’re not alone. Even in hard seasons, laughter keeps us tethered to one another.
And no, it’s not about ignoring reality or pretending things don’t matter.
It’s about resilience.
Research shows that laughter supports heart health, relaxes muscles, boosts immunity, and helps manage pain. But beyond the science, it does something just as important — it gives us permission to breathe again.
For me, laughter is part of self-care.
Part of protecting my peace.
Part of surviving days that could otherwise wear me down.
Some days it’s a quiet chuckle.
Some days it’s laughing at the absurdity of life.
Some days it’s laughing so I don’t cry — and that’s okay too.
If today feels heavy, you don’t have to force joy.
But if laughter shows up, let it stay awhile.
It might be doing more for you than you realize.
