When One Decision Changes the Rhythm of Your Life

This morning, I woke up feeling better than I have for the past few mornings.

I slept well.
My pain level wasn’t too bad.
Mentally, I was okay…but still processing.

So, I took my morning medication, made myself a strong cup of cowboy coffee, and climbed back into bed.

Sometimes you need to sit quietly before trying to make sense of everything stirring inside your head.

Yesterday, one of my medical doctors gave me a new direction for improving my physical health. I understand his reasoning. I respect what he said. Under the right circumstances, his recommendation makes complete sense.

But real life does not always fit neatly inside a medical recommendation.

One new direction can create a whole line of other decisions.

A change involving my health may also require a change in how and where I work. That affects my schedule, transportation, medical appointments, physical therapy, daily responsibilities, and the working rhythm I have carefully built.

Working from home has allowed me to create a system that works for my body and my mind.

I still move intentionally throughout the day. I use the equipment I keep nearby. I listen to my body. I manage my pain. I do my job, handle my responsibilities, and remain productive.

I have also found peace in the rhythm of my days.

I can pause long enough to look out the window and see what my birds are doing. I can write when a thought comes to me. I can adjust my movement, seating, or surroundings without drawing attention to myself.

That rhythm has helped me remain mentally solid.

Now, I may have to figure out how to rebuild that stability inside a different environment.

And that is the part weighing heavily on me.

It is not that I am refusing the medical direction. It is not that I don’t understand the possible benefits. I am simply aware that making one change can create several others that nobody standing outside my life may immediately see.

Sometimes advice makes perfect sense on paper, but once placed inside someone’s actual life, the logistics become complicated.

How will it work?

What needs to change?

What can remain the same?

How do I protect my physical health without unsettling my mental health?

How do I follow a new medical direction without losing the independence and peace I have worked hard to regain?

Those are the questions sitting beside me this morning.

I do not have all the answers yet, but I have identified my first step. I will speak with the appropriate person and learn how to work through the process correctly before assuming what the outcome will be.

That alone gives my mind somewhere to rest.

Today, I do not have to solve every detail.

I can sit here with my cowboy coffee, appreciate that my pain is manageable, and allow myself time to process what this new direction may mean.

Life has taught me that change does not always knock politely and wait until we are ready. Sometimes it walks through the door, pulls up a chair, and places a whole new situation in our lap.

Then we breathe.

We think.

We gather the right information.

And one thoughtful step at a time, we figure out how to make the change fit our real life—without losing ourselves in the process.

That is what I am doing this morning.

Processing. Planning. Protecting my sanity.

And drinking my cowboy coffee while I do it.
