Fasting From People

I recently heard the statement “fasting from people,” and I immediately loved it.

You could also say:

I love my me time.

I love my solitude.

I love my own company.

But when you stop talking as much, don’t call or choose not to see anyone, some people take it personally.

More often than not, it isn’t about anyone else. It is something we are doing for ourselves.

At least, that is my story.

I am fasting from people right now.

And honestly, I do not have the words to fully explain why.

I just know that I need it.

When I think of fasting, I usually connect it to health and wellness. People may fast for spiritual reasons, health reasons, weight loss or preparation for a medical procedure.

Whatever the reason, fasting means intentionally abstaining from something for a period of time.

So, when I heard the phrase “fasting from people,” it made perfect sense to me.

It clearly expresses where a person’s mind is while offering a reason without requiring a long explanation.

It says:

I am stepping back.

I need quiet.

I need time with myself.

Fasting from people can mean taking an intentional break from social interaction, conversations and digital communication to rest your mind and restore your energy. Some people may call it a social detox or simply a period of solitude.

There are many reasons someone may need this time:

  • Mental exhaustion from too much talking, socializing or working with the public.
  • Digital overload from constant notifications, text messages and social media.
  • A need for quiet reflection and time to hear your own inner voice.
  • An emotional reset before exhaustion becomes burnout or irritability.

A social fast does not have to mean disappearing indefinitely or cutting everyone out of your life. It could be one quiet evening, an entire weekend or certain hours of the day that belong only to you.

You might silence nonessential notifications, place your phone in another room, read, journal, rest or spend time in nature.

You may also want to let the people closest to you know that you are taking some quiet time so they don’t worry.

This is not necessarily rejection, anger or punishment.

Sometimes, you simply need to stop giving your energy outward long enough to restore something within yourself.

You may not even understand everything you are feeling yet.

And you don’t have to.

Sometimes the need for quiet arrives before the words do.

Have you ever fasted from people?

Or do you need to take some time to fast from people now?
