Service Industry: The Power of How We Show Up
Let’s talk about the service industry for a minute…
Because it’s not just about doing a job.
It’s about how we show up for people—especially when they’re already frustrated, confused, or anxious.
One of the most important things we can do?
Listen.
Not halfway listen.
Not listen while thinking about the next task.
Really listen.
And then…
Repeat back what you heard.
Because that simple step?
It confirms accuracy…
and more importantly—it lets the person know:
👉 “I hear you.”
👉 “You’re not talking into the void.”
Slow Down to Speed Up
It’s okay to take a moment.
Especially when someone is:
– confused
– overwhelmed
– or anxious
That extra minute to:
– calm them down
– explain the process
– or guide them to the next step
Can change the entire outcome of the interaction.
Because when people understand what’s happening…they settle.
The Reality of Today’s Systems
Let’s be real…
We’re in an era of mass technology.
And while it’s meant to make things easier…
it doesn’t always feel that way.
– Long hold times
– Automated prompts that don’t work
– Systems that aren’t user-friendly
By the time someone finally reaches a real person?
They’re already frustrated.
This Is Where We Come In
That’s where the service industry matters most.
We have to understand:
People aren’t just calling with a question…
they’re calling after trying, waiting, and sometimes struggling to even get to us.
So when they finally connect?
We set the tone.
Calm. Clear. Approachable.
A calm tone…
clear communication…
and letting someone know you heard them…
That alone can shift the entire interaction.
I see it every day working in the medical field.
I talk to people who are:
– in pain
– scared
– or dealing with serious diagnoses
These aren’t easy calls.
But how we respond?
Matters.
We Influence the Outcome
We may not be able to fix everything…
But we can:
– create clarity
– reduce anxiety
– and guide people forward
And that changes the experience.
Now yes…
There will always be people who:
– rant
– complain
– or come in with energy that’s hard to receive
But even then…
Our approach still matters.
Final Thought
In a world full of systems, delays, and frustration…
Being a calm, clear, and compassionate voice?
That’s powerful.
And sometimes…
That’s exactly what someone needed.
