A Taste of Flava

Hummingbird Stories

Today I had a conversation with my friend Janice that made me stop and think.

We were talking about S, a coworker we both cared about who recently passed away. J had just attended S’s memorial service and later called me on her way home.

During our conversation, J shared that after her mother passed away, a hummingbird began appearing in her yard. She said it became a comforting symbol for her during a difficult time.

I smiled because earlier that same day, I had seen a hummingbird outside my tower window.

Now, hummingbirds rarely visit my little corner of the world. I spend a lot of time watching the birds, squirrels, and wildlife outside my window. I know my regular visitors. A hummingbird is a rare sighting for me.

What struck me was that this tiny bird appeared on a day when I had spent hours thinking about S.

As J shared her story, I shared mine.

I told her that I think I am going to call the hummingbird “S.”

Do I think the hummingbird is literally S? No.

But I do believe that life gives us symbols.

I believe that sometimes a song, a butterfly, a bird, a flower, a familiar scent, or a special place can remind us of someone we love.

Those reminders bring comfort.

Google describes hummingbirds as symbols of joy, resilience, courage, healing, and spiritual awakening. Many cultures have viewed them as messengers, guides, and reminders to appreciate life’s sweet moments.

I found myself reflecting on that.

Sara was young.

She was good at her job.

She talked smack.

She was funny.

She would fix me a plate of food when my hip was bothering me and then tease me about needing the help.

She made work more enjoyable.

Maybe that’s why the hummingbird felt right.

Small but memorable.

Quick but impossible to ignore.

Rare and special.

Whether you believe in signs or not, I think many of us have symbols that connect us to the people we love.

What symbol reminds you of someone special?
