The Struggles To Get Noticed On Social Media

The other day I saw a young man post that he was giving himself one more year to make his dream happen. He had moved from Chicago to New York and wanted to build a career as a:

  • Model
  • Actor
  • Influencer

He looked to be no more than 25-28 years old.

When I was part of the Indie Arts Scene, I understood those struggles completely. Trying to get noticed, gain followers, create engagement, and convince people to pay attention is not easy. I attended webinars, bought books, and spent countless hours trying to learn how the game worked.

I came into the internet world before Facebook. I remember the MySpace days. Honestly, there seemed to be much more interaction back then. Then came Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and a long list of other platforms. Some of them have come and gone. The internet is now incredibly crowded.

I feel for this young man.

And I feel for anyone trying to compete against millions of other people who are all hoping to gain traction, build an audience, and create something meaningful.

At some point, I personally and professionally stepped away from the indie arts and entertainment industry. It wore me out. I stopped enjoying it.

Truthfully?

I aged out.

I still pay attention, though. I am amazed at who gains a following and sometimes surprised at who doesn’t. Talent, hard work, and consistency don’t always guarantee success online.

Where do you fit into this social media world?

I post on a variety of platforms and share my blogs in different places. What interests me most isn’t how many followers I have. I enjoy seeing what countries are reading my blogs and which topics seem to connect with people.

I write hoping that something I share resonates with someone else. Maybe I offer information that helps. Maybe I make someone think. Maybe I simply remind someone they aren’t alone.

I’m not blogging to compete.

I was curious about why it is so difficult for people to get noticed online, so I did a little research and wanted to share what I found.

Why Is It So Hard To Get Noticed?

Social media is more crowded than ever.

  • Organic reach continues to decline.
  • Platforms prioritize paid advertising.
  • Algorithms constantly change.
  • Millions of creators are competing for attention every day.

Even great content can get ignored.

Researchers and marketing experts say some of the biggest challenges include:

  • Weak opening hooks
  • Content that feels too generic
  • Trying to sell instead of connect
  • Creator burnout
  • Inconsistent posting

The experts also suggest:

  • Grab attention quickly
  • Create content people want to save and share
  • Focus on genuine engagement
  • Build community instead of simply collecting followers
  • Stay consistent even when growth feels slow

Reading that made a lot of sense to me.

At the end of the day, social media can be a wonderful tool for connection, but it can also leave people feeling invisible when their efforts don’t get noticed.

Maybe the challenge isn’t simply being seen.

Maybe it’s continuing to create even when you don’t know who is watching.

🤔

Let’s Talk About It.

Have you ever tried to build a following, grow a business, promote your work, or gain attention online?

What has your experience been?
