Preparing For An MRI
Today I finally had my MRI after weeks of waiting for insurance approval and scheduling.
As someone who works in healthcare, I know that many people struggle with MRI exams. For some, the challenge is the loud noises. For others, it is having to remain still for an extended period of time. And for many people, claustrophobia is a very real concern.
If you know you become anxious in enclosed spaces, talk with your ordering provider before your MRI appointment. In many cases, medication can be prescribed to help you relax during the exam. This is usually arranged before the appointment, so don’t wait until the day of your MRI to ask.
If you take medication to help with anxiety, make sure you have a driver available, as you may not be able to safely drive yourself home afterward.
What surprised me today was how calm I felt.
Over the last several months, BreathWork and Meditation have become part of my morning and evening routine. I practice even on days when I don’t feel like it because I believe consistency matters.
Today I realized those small daily habits have been preparing me for moments like this.
I went into the MRI head first, with ear plugs and jazz music playing through headphones. Then I spent 45 minutes lying still while the machine made every sound imaginable.
Instead of focusing on the noise, I closed my eyes, focused on my breathing, and naturally settled into a calm state.
The experience reminded me that the things we practice daily often show up when we need them most.
Whether it is BreathWork, Meditation, Prayer, Mindfulness, or another relaxation technique, having a way to calm your mind and body can make challenging situations a little easier to manage.
Have you ever needed an MRI?
How did you do with the experience?
Blessings,
