Preparing for Your Senior Years

The Conversations We Should Be Having in Our 50s

Chapter 2: Whole Health Begins with Understanding the Connection

Most of us grew up thinking about our health one symptom at a time.

My back hurts.
My blood pressure is high.
I’m tired.
I’m stressed.
I can’t sleep.

We treat each issue as though it stands alone.

But as I’ve gotten older and experienced my own health challenges, I’ve realized something important.

Our health isn’t divided into little boxes.

Everything is connected.

Our mind affects how we think, handle stress, and process life’s challenges.

Our body carries us through life. It needs movement, good nutrition, sleep, hydration, and medical care when something isn’t working properly.

Our spirit—or soul—is where we find hope, purpose, gratitude, peace, and the strength to keep moving forward.

When one area struggles, the others often feel it too.

I’ve experienced this firsthand.

When I’m overwhelmed, my body feels heavier.

When I don’t sleep well, my pain is usually worse.

When I’m constipated, my hips and pelvis remind me very quickly that something isn’t right.

But I’ve also noticed the opposite.

When I wake up feeling peaceful…

When I laugh with my coworkers…

When I listen to a good audiobook…

When I take time to simply breathe and enjoy a quiet morning…

My entire body responds differently.

Am I suddenly pain-free?

No.

But I am functioning differently.

As we prepare for our senior years, I don’t believe our goal should be to achieve perfect balance. Life will always bring challenges.

I believe our goal should be to become more aware.

Instead of only asking,

“What’s wrong with me?”

Maybe we should also ask:

  • What is my mind trying to tell me?
  • What is my body trying to tell me?
  • What is my spirit needing today?

The better we understand how these three parts work together, the better we can care for ourselves.

Whole health isn’t about perfection.

It’s about awareness.

And awareness is often where healing begins.
