Are You Living… or Just Managing Symptoms?
As someone who lives with chronic pain, I know what it’s like to spend a lot of time managing symptoms.
Take the medication.
Go to the appointment.
Do the exercises.
Drink more water.
Get more sleep.
Repeat.
Those things are important. They all have a place in taking care of ourselves.
But lately, I’ve been asking myself a different question.
Am I just managing my symptoms… or am I still living my life?
There is a difference.
Managing symptoms is necessary.
Living is intentional.
Living is laughing with coworkers during a stressful day.
It’s listening to a good audiobook.
It’s enjoying a quiet morning with a cup of coffee or tea.
It’s watching the birds outside your window.
It’s taking a shower and feeling proud that you had the strength to wash your hair.
It’s celebrating a day when you can walk a little taller.
I’ve realized that if all I focus on is what’s wrong with my body, I’ll miss everything that’s still going right.
That doesn’t mean we ignore our health.
It means we don’t let our health challenges become our entire identity.
Our diagnosis is part of our story.
It is not the whole story.
So today I want to leave you with one question:
Are you spending all of your energy managing symptoms… or are you also making time to truly live?
Even if it’s just one small moment today…
Choose something that reminds you you’re still living.
