Raised in Wisdom… Learning to Carry It Forward

This morning, I sat in my tower…

window cracked just enough to let that cool Seattle air come in. The birds were already talking, like they had somewhere to be and something to say.

My hot water was ready.

My coffee was brewing.

And I was listening… not just hearing, but really listening.

Voices like Shi Heng Yi

reflections from Marcus Aurelius

And it hit me in a way that made me pause.

This kind of wisdom… isn’t new to me.

I was raised around people who lived like this.

My Daddy… my God Mother…

and the people they surrounded themselves with…

They didn’t just talk about life.

They understood it.

They would pull my coattail when I was veering off.

Not to control me… but to guide me.

They saw things before I did.

And they weren’t afraid to say:

“Baby… slow down.”

“That’s not the right direction.”

“Think about what you’re doing.”

At the time, you don’t always realize what you’re being given.

But now?

I see it clearly.

That’s why this kind of teaching still speaks to me today.

Because it feels familiar.

Not trendy.

Not loud.

Not rushed.

Just… grounded.

And as I sat here this morning, I realized something else…

I’ve always looked forward to becoming that.

That wise elder.

That steady voice.

That person who can guide, not just talk.

But somewhere along the way, I started wondering…

Does the world even value that anymore?

Everything feels so fast now.

Quick opinions.

Quick reactions.

Quick judgments.

But wisdom?

Wisdom takes time.

It takes living.

It takes reflection.

And maybe that’s the shift I’m stepping into…

Not waiting for the world to value wisdom…

But choosing to carry it anyway.

Because the truth is…

Some people are still looking for it.

They’re just not always loud about it.

So this morning, as I sip my coffee…

I’m not just listening to wise voices from the past.

I’m recognizing something within myself.

I was raised in wisdom.

And now…

I’m learning how to live it,

walk in it,

and quietly pass it on.
