Sunday Real Talk
Hard Work and Determination
Last night I watched a movie that stayed with me long after it ended.
It wasn’t because it had a perfect ending.
It wasn’t because the characters had easy lives.
In fact, it was just the opposite.
The story followed three generations of a family whose lives had been shaped by difficult circumstances, broken relationships, addiction, painful choices, and the environments they were raised in. There were moments of disappointment, frustration, and heartache.
As I watched, I found myself thinking…
Life doesn’t hand everyone the same starting point.
Some people are raised with encouragement, stability, and opportunity.
Others grow up surrounded by chaos, addiction, poverty, trauma, or unhealthy relationships.
None of us get to choose where our story begins.
But at some point, each of us has to decide where we want our story to go.
That decision is where hard work and determination begin.
Not because life suddenly becomes easy.
Not because the obstacles disappear.
But because we’ve made a choice to move in a different direction.
Maybe that direction is improving your health.
Maybe it’s repairing a relationship.
Maybe it’s learning to trust again.
Maybe it’s returning to school.
Maybe it’s managing your finances differently.
Maybe it’s healing from something you’ve carried for years.
Maybe it’s simply becoming the person you’ve always wanted to be.
The destination is different for each of us.
The commitment is the same.
As human beings, it’s often easier to pay attention to other people’s lives.
We notice their mistakes.
We talk about their decisions.
We wonder why they don’t change.
But the hardest part is to be honest with is ourselves.
Real growth begins the moment we stop asking, “What do they need to change?” and start asking, “What do I need to change?”
That kind of honesty isn’t always comfortable.
It requires us to take an honest inventory of our lives.
To recognize where we’ve become stuck.
To admit where we’ve made excuses.
To acknowledge where we’ve stopped believing in ourselves.
And then…
To decide what we’re willing to do about it.
Hard work isn’t just about achieving success.
Determination isn’t just about reaching a goal.
Together, they become the mindset that helps us create forward movement in every area of our lives.
Not all at once.
One choice.
One habit.
One step at a time.
Today, I leave you with one question.
If you were completely honest with yourself… where in your life do you need to put in the work?
Your future won’t be shaped by what you hope will happen.
It will be shaped by the choices you make after you answer that question.
Blessings,
Lady Flava 🌻
