Forgetfulness

Have you ever walked into a room and forgot why you went in there?

Or misplaced your glasses only to find them sitting on top of your head? 🤣

We all have moments like that.

As I have gotten older, I have become more aware of forgetfulness. But I don’t believe that every time someone forgets something, it automatically means they have dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

There are many reasons a person may become forgetful.

Sometimes it is stress.

Sometimes it is poor sleep.

Sometimes it is medications.

Sometimes our minds are juggling so many things that something simply slips through the cracks.

As someone who has worked in healthcare for many years, I have learned that if you really pay attention, patterns begin to tell a story.

You may notice someone forgetting things only when they are under stress.

Another person may always struggle because their brain simply processes information differently.

Someone who isn’t sleeping well may have trouble concentrating or remembering conversations.

Then there are times when forgetfulness begins to interfere with everyday life. That is when it deserves more attention.

Normal Forgetfulness

These things happen to many of us.

• Forgetting where you put your keys.
• Walking into a room and forgetting why.
• Occasionally searching for the right word.
• Missing an appointment once in a while.
• Being distracted because life is busy.

Things Worth Paying Attention To

If you notice these changes in yourself or someone you love, it is important to speak with a healthcare provider.

• Asking the same questions over and over.
• Repeating the same stories several times in a short period.
• Getting lost in familiar places.
• Forgetting how to do familiar tasks like paying bills or following a favorite recipe.
• Confusion about people, places, or time.
• Noticeable changes in personality, judgment, or behavior.

Not every memory problem is dementia.

Many causes of forgetfulness can be treated, including lack of sleep, stress, depression, medication side effects, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid problems, or other medical conditions.

The important thing is not to ignore changes that seem unusual.

We know our own minds.

We also know the people we love.

If something feels different and the pattern continues, don’t be afraid to have it evaluated.

Sometimes it brings peace of mind.

Sometimes it allows treatment to begin early.

Either way, paying attention is one of the best gifts we can give ourselves and those we love.

Google Information

Forgetfulness is common and often has simple, treatable causes such as stress, poor sleep, anxiety, medication side effects, vitamin B12 deficiency, or thyroid problems. Normal aging may slow recall, but it should not interfere with daily independence. Memory changes that include getting lost in familiar places, repeating questions frequently, difficulty completing familiar tasks, or significant changes in judgment or personality should be discussed with a healthcare provider. Early evaluation can help identify reversible causes or detect conditions such as dementia while treatment and support options are most effective.
