H&W|Fall Check In

Thursday Health & Wellness | Fall Check-In

I’m checking in once again, friends.

As we enter a different environmental season, let’s pay attention to how we are feeling—mind, body, and spirit.

This may be a good time to start a Health & Wellness Journal if you haven’t already. I will tag my previous blog on this subject at the end of this one.

You might be thinking, “Flava, why do you keep bringing this up?”

Well, I’m going to share my thoughts again—but this time with a seasonal twist.

No matter our age—and you know I especially speak to my Senior Seasoned SoulZ—sometimes we don’t pay close enough attention to what our bodies are telling us. Other times, we notice something but blow it off, even though it may be a symptom worthy of our attention.

Here in Seattle, the weather is getting ready to turn cooler and wetter, with noticeable changes in the wind and the amount of daylight.

Those environmental changes can affect us in different ways.

Body

This time of year may bring more body aches, stiffness, and pain.

Do you have a plan?

Is your healthcare team aware of how seasonal changes affect your body?

Do you take medication when needed, and do you know what is safe for you?

What helps you feel better—warmth, gentle movement, rest, stretching, or something else?

Mind

Some of us deal with more brain fog when the clouds settle overhead. We may need a little something to jump-start our minds.

Coffee! 🖐🏼😂

What is your go-to reviver?

Maybe it’s coffee, a morning routine, a puzzle, a good book, lively conversation, or stepping outside for some fresh air.

Spirit

With less sunlight, some people experience lower vitamin D levels or notice that their mood feels a little bluer than it did during the spring and summer months.

Do you have a plan to help yourself move through the cooler, darker season?

Please find your happy place.

Maybe it’s prayer or meditation.

Maybe it’s fun, lively music.

Maybe it’s an audiobook, a creative project, time with people you love, or simply sitting near a window and noticing the beauty that still exists on a rainy day.

And if you notice a significant or lasting change in your mood, energy, sleep, appetite, thinking, or physical health, please talk with your healthcare team. You don’t have to wait until something feels unbearable before you bring it up.

It is time for a self-check-in—an honest self-check-in—and a Fall Health & Wellness Game Plan.

Ask yourself:

How am I feeling mentally?

How is my body responding to the changing weather?

What does my spirit need from me right now?

What can I put into place before the season fully changes?

I keep returning to this subject because paying attention to ourselves matters.

And because I care about you.

If you would like, we can process this together in the comments section of this blog. You may also send me a private message at DearFlava@gmail.com.

If you are comfortable with me sharing your thoughts anonymously in a future conversation, just include a yay or nay.

Let’s enter this new season prepared, aware, and willing to care for ourselves—mind, body, and spirit.
