Preparing for Your Senior Years | Part 10: Your Future Self Is Counting on You

Preparing for Your Senior Years

The Conversations We Should Be Having in Our 50s

Part 10: Your Future Self Is Counting on You

When we are in our 50s, we may still feel as if our senior years are somewhere far down the road.

We are working, taking care of family, paying bills, helping others, and managing the responsibilities right in front of us. We may tell ourselves that we will think about aging later.

But later has a way of showing up.

The person you will become in your 60s, 70s, and beyond is counting on the decisions you are making today.

Your Future Self Is Counting on You to Pay Attention to Your Whole Body

Your health is about more than your ability to walk and move.

Pay attention to all areas of your health—even the concerns people may feel embarrassed or uncomfortable discussing.

Schedule your routine appointments and recommended screenings. Learn your family medical history. Know your medications, diagnoses, allergies, and providers. Ask questions when something does not feel right.

Your health conversations may include:

  • Blood pressure and heart health
  • Cholesterol and circulation
  • Diabetes and blood sugar
  • Kidney and liver function
  • Cancer screenings
  • Bone density and osteoporosis
  • Arthritis, joint pain, strength, and mobility
  • Balance, dizziness, and fall prevention
  • Vision and eye health
  • Hearing changes
  • Dental and gum health
  • Sleep and breathing concerns
  • Digestive and bowel changes
  • Bladder health and incontinence
  • Sexual and reproductive health
  • Menopause and hormonal changes
  • Weight, nutrition, and hydration
  • Medication side effects and interactions
  • Memory and cognitive changes
  • Depression, anxiety, stress, grief, and emotional wellness
  • Alcohol, tobacco, and other substance use
  • Vaccinations and preventive care

Screening and treatment needs vary from person to person. Talk with your healthcare provider about what is appropriate for your age, medical history, family history, and current concerns.

Do not assume that something is “just part of getting older.”

A change may be common, but that does not mean you have to silently live with it. Pain, fatigue, bladder leakage, bowel changes, hearing loss, poor sleep, anxiety, memory concerns, or difficulty moving all deserve an honest conversation.

Understanding your body now may prevent you from spending years wondering why something became harder.

Your Future Self Is Counting on You to Keep Moving Safely

Strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance matter as we age. But every exercise is not right for every body.

Listen when your body tells you something is wrong. Pain is information.

Ask for physical therapy when you need guidance. Make sure the person helping you understands your diagnoses, limitations, previous surgeries, medications, and current treatment plan.

Movement should support your body—not punish it.

Your Future Self Is Counting on You to Prepare Financially

You do not have to be wealthy to make a plan.

Know what you have in savings and retirement accounts. Understand your Social Security benefits, insurance coverage, debt, housing expenses, and monthly obligations.

Think about what would happen if you could no longer work full-time or needed time away from work for surgery, illness, caregiving, or recovery.

Learn about your paid time off, sick leave, disability benefits, medical leave, and insurance responsibilities before you need to use them.

Small financial decisions made consistently can create more choices later.

Your Future Self Is Counting on You to Think About Where You Will Live

Can you safely manage the stairs in your home?

Is there a bathroom near the room where you would recover from surgery?

Could you remain in your home if you needed a walker, shower chair, raised toilet seat, or caregiver?

Would you prefer to age in place, move into a smaller home, live near family, or consider a senior community?

Do not wait for a crisis to begin having these conversations.

Your Future Self Is Counting on You to Organize Your Information

Create a wellness binder or another system that works for you.

Keep your important information together:

  • Current medication and allergy lists
  • Provider names and clinic numbers
  • Diagnoses and treatment plans
  • Insurance information
  • Appointment summaries
  • Test and imaging information
  • Surgical history
  • Emergency contacts
  • Legal and financial documents
  • Advance directives and healthcare wishes

Make sure someone you trust knows where this information is located.

Your Future Self Is Counting on You to Choose Your Support System Wisely

Pay attention to who brings peace into your life and who brings chaos.

Know who you could call for help—and be honest about who may not be dependable when you truly need them.

Talk with your family or chosen support system about transportation, appointments, surgery, home recovery, medication assistance, meals, caregiving, and emergencies before help is needed.

Support should not be assumed. Expectations need to be discussed.

Your Future Self Is Counting on You to Keep Living

While you are preparing for the practical parts of aging, do not forget your emotional and spiritual wellness.

Keep doing something that belongs to you.

Write. Garden. Pray. Create. Travel. Learn. Laugh. Sit with your coffee and enjoy the morning. Build a life that still gives you a reason to look forward to tomorrow.

Preparing for your senior years is not about living in fear of what might happen.

It is about giving yourself more options.

You will not be able to control everything that happens to your body or your life. None of us can. But you can pay attention. You can prepare. You can ask questions. You can make choices today that may ease the burden tomorrow.

One day, your future self may look back and say:

Thank you for taking care of me before you even knew exactly what I would need.

Your future self is counting on you.

Start where you are.
