Understanding Diabetes: What Your Body May Be Trying to Tell You

Diabetes is something many of us hear about often, yet a lot of people don’t fully understand how serious it can become if it isn’t managed properly.

Over the years, I’ve known many people who live with diabetes and take medications or insulin injections every day to manage it.

When I worked at a rehabilitation hospital in Las Vegas, I saw another side of this disease that stayed with me. Several patients were amputees due to complications from diabetes. That experience made it very real for me.

Diabetes doesn’t just affect blood sugar levels. When uncontrolled over time, it can affect circulation, nerves, vision, kidneys, and healing.

That’s why awareness and prevention matter.

Common Signs of Diabetes:

Sometimes diabetes develops slowly, and people may not realize what their body is trying to tell them.

Some common symptoms include:

• Constant thirst

• Frequent urination, especially at night

• Extreme fatigue

• Blurry vision

• Slow-healing cuts or sores

• Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet

• Unexplained weight loss

• Recurring infections

These symptoms occur because the body is struggling to properly use glucose (sugar) for energy.

Type 1 vs. Type 2 Diabetes

There are two main types of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes usually develops quickly and often appears earlier in life. The body stops producing insulin and requires lifelong insulin therapy.

Type 2 diabetes develops more slowly and is more common in adults. The body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or doesn’t use it effectively.

Many people also experience prediabetes, where blood sugar levels are elevated but not yet in the diabetic range.

Health Tips to Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

While not all diabetes can be prevented, lifestyle habits can significantly reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Helpful habits include:

• Staying physically active

• Maintaining a healthy weight

• Limiting processed sugars and refined carbohydrates

• Eating balanced meals with fiber, vegetables, and lean proteins

• Drinking water instead of sugary beverages

• Getting regular health checkups

Small changes over time can make a big difference.

Diet Tips for People Living with Diabetes

For those managing diabetes, diet plays a major role in keeping blood sugar levels stable.

Helpful tips often include:

• Eating regular, balanced meals

• Choosing whole grains over refined carbohydrates

• Adding more vegetables and high-fiber foods

• Including lean protein with meals

• Watching portion sizes

• Limiting sugary snacks and beverages

Working with a healthcare provider or nutrition specialist can help create a plan that works for each individual.

Can Diabetes Be Reversed?

Type 1 diabetes cannot be reversed.

However, some people with Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes can improve their blood sugar levels significantly through lifestyle changes such as weight loss, healthier eating habits, and increased physical activity. In some cases, blood sugar levels can return to a normal range, though ongoing management is still important.

A Reminder to Take Care of Your Health

Diabetes is common, but it should never be taken lightly.

The good news is that awareness, early detection, and healthy habits can make a big difference in preventing complications.

Sometimes the best thing we can do for our future health is start paying attention to the signals our body is sending today.

Your health is one of your greatest investments.

Take care of it.
