Dehydration… and Knowing When You’re Actually Hydrated

Let’s talk about something simple…

but a lot of us are still getting wrong.

Water.

Not just drinking it…

but knowing if your body is actually getting what it needs.

Because here’s the truth—

a lot of people think they’re hydrated… and they’re not.

I’ve learned to pay attention to my body more.

Not guessing.

Not assuming.

Paying attention.

Because dehydration doesn’t always show up loud.

Sometimes it’s subtle.

You might feel:

Tired for no reason

A little dizzy when you stand up

Headaches that just won’t sit down

Dry mouth or lips

Muscle cramps

That sluggish, “off” feeling

And a lot of times… we don’t think “water.”

We think:

“I need coffee.”

“I need to eat something.”

“I just need to push through.”

Meanwhile… your body is saying:

“I need hydration.”

Now let’s make this real simple.

The easiest way to check your hydration?

Look at your urine.

I know… not glamorous, but it’s honest.

Pale yellow or light straw color?

You’re doing good.

Dark yellow or amber?

You need more water.

Not going often? That’s another sign.

Your body will always tell on you.

Another quick check:

That little skin test.

Pinch the skin on the back of your hand.

If it snaps right back → you’re likely hydrated If it takes a second → your body needs fluids

Simple.

And let’s talk about thirst for a second.

If you’re already thirsty…

You’re already a little behind.

So instead of waiting for your body to sound the alarm—

stay ahead of it.

Now on the flip side…

You can overdo it too.

If your urine is completely clear all day long,

you might be flushing out too many electrolytes.

So this isn’t about forcing water down…

It’s about balance.

So how do we stay hydrated the right way?

Keep it simple:

Sip water throughout the day (don’t wait and chug)

Pay attention to your body cues

Drink more when it’s hot, when you’re active, or not feeling well

Add in things like herbal tea, fruits, or even electrolytes when needed

When should you take dehydration seriously?

Listen… don’t ignore your body if it’s struggling.

If you feel:

Extremely dizzy

Weak or confused

Rapid heartbeat

Or you’re barely urinating

That’s not something to “wait out.”

That’s your body saying:

“Help me.”

At the end of the day…

This isn’t complicated.

But it does require awareness.

And that’s what Health & Wellness really is—

not doing the most…

but doing the basics consistently.

Real Talk Check-In:

When was the last time you actually paid attention

to whether you were hydrated… not just drinking water?

Take care of your body… it’s talking to you all day.
