People Will Try to Put You in a Box
I’ve lived long enough to see something clearly.
People will try to figure you out fast.
They look at you…
they listen for a minute…
and then they decide who you are.
I’ve been seen one way most of my life.
Then I went to Vegas… and suddenly I was seen completely different.
That was new for me.
And not just new…
Frustrating.
I found myself in situations where people:
made assumptions about my identity
judged me based on what they saw or
expected me to pick a side
And I realized something real quick…
People are more comfortable putting you in a box based off of assumptions, than actually getting to know you.
I used to explain myself.
Where I was raised.
My family.
My background.
I would try to help people understand me.
But after a while?
I got tired.
Because if someone is committed to misunderstanding you…
There’s nothing you can say that will change that.
So now?
I don’t feel the need to explain.
I don’t feel the need to correct every assumption.
I don’t feel the need to fit into something that makes other people comfortable.
I know who I am.
That’s enough.
People can think what they want.
They will anyway.
You don’t need to explain yourself to people who are committed to misunderstanding you.
