How You Show Up Gives A Glimpse Into Your Personality
I came up in an environment where people believed in presenting themselves a certain way.
You had school clothes and play clothes. You had your Sunday Best and outfits for special occasions and gatherings. Parents dressed up for work. You didn’t just throw anything on and head out the door. There was pride in how you carried yourself.
Fashion was honestly more a part of my life than I realized.
As a teenager, I loved dressing up. As a young adult, I had my outfits lined up for going dancing. Then as a young professional, I got into matching shoes, purses, accessories, jewelry… all the little details that made me feel put together.
Then came my obsession with leopard print. 😁
Leopard print became more than a style choice for me. It became part of my personality and eventually part of my brand. Clothing, scarves, cups, blankets, bags, home decor… if it had leopard print on it, there was a good chance I wanted it.
When I embraced the identity of Lady Flava, leopard print became a must alongside my white hair. It became part of my visual signature. People immediately recognized it as “me.”
Recently I listened to a video talking about how the way you show up says a lot about how you feel about yourself and how others may perceive you.
Honestly… I agree.
When I feel good mentally and emotionally, I’m more intentional about what I put on. And even on days when I wake up feeling off or irritated, sometimes putting on the right outfit can shift my entire mood. It is almost like psyching myself into a better mindset.
The right lipstick.
The right earrings.
The right shoes.
The right sweater.
Sometimes those small things help you feel more like yourself again.
Now that I work from home, I realize I miss dressing for work. I miss putting lipstick on. I miss fully “showing up” for my day physically. Working from home became more about comfort and survival than presentation.
But honestly, once my body starts feeling better, I want to get back to being more mindful in how I show up for myself during my workday. Not for attention. Not for validation. Just for me.
Because sometimes getting dressed is not about impressing other people.
Sometimes it is about reminding yourself that you still matter.
At the same time, I also understand that clothing and appearance do not define a person’s heart or character. People dress according to comfort, finances, culture, work environments, personality, and life circumstances. Some people feel best dressed up, while others feel most authentic in jeans, hoodies, and sneakers.
Neither is wrong.
But I do believe how you show up often gives people a glimpse into:
your confidence,
your mood,
your creativity,
your energy,
and sometimes even how connected you feel to yourself in that moment.
So what about you?
What’s Your Style of Dress?
Does how you show up matter to you?
Or do you feel most comfortable keeping things simple and relaxed?
Let’s Talk About It 🌻
